Young people are being sought to help a council's decision-making processes.

Cumberland Council said it would like to hear from those aged 14 to 17 living in the Petteril area of Carlisle to "flag up what they think is important" as part of a panel.

The group, which would meet about four times a year, would include up to 10 teenagers and is the first initiative of its kind for the Labour-led authority.

Justin McDermott, from the council's public health and communities department, said people "often told him there's little for young people to do", and while the role would be "challenging" it would also be "really important" for Petteril.

"I think their input will be invaluable, and hopefully it could also encourage more young people into local government," McDermott said.

The council said it had plans to have two members of the group on the full community panel.

The Petteril Community Panel covers the wards of Botcherby, Currock, Harraby South, Harraby North, and Upperby.

The authority said a parent or carer must express interest on their behalf before 30 April.
