Rise in reports of illegal metal detecting

Police are reporting an increase in the number of reports of metal detectorists illegally searching on protected land.

The practice, known as nighthawking, targets sites of archaeological interest and involves digging up historic artefacts.

Humberside Police said it was investigating incidents in partnership with Historic England and local authorities, and it has appealed for people to report any suspicious activity, especially at night.

"What might look like just a hole in a field is actually criminal damage and theft," the force said. "Items found are rarely reported to the local authority as required by the Treasure Act 1996."
