A stolen car being pursued by police has been involved in a multi-vehicle crash.

The Mercedes crossed the border into West Yorkshire from East Yorkshire on the M62 at 16:00 BST and failed to stop for officers.

West Yorkshire Police said the car was involved in a collision with four other vehicles a few minutes later on Bradford Road, Birstall, at the junction with Cambridge Road.

The 21-year-old man driving the car was arrested on suspicion of burglary, dangerous driving, possession of cannabis and a public order offence before being taken to hospital.

A force spokesperson said: "Several people were checked over at the scene by the ambulance service, with one man being taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"The road remains closed while inquiries are being carried out.

"We are also liaising with our colleagues at Humberside Police."
