Motorists have been hit with delays following a crash on the M6

Motorists have been hit with delays as part of a motorway had to close because of a crash.

The collision, between a HGV and a Seat Tarraco, happened just after 13:00 BST on the M6 near Penrith.

Cumbria Police said one of the passengers in the car suffered life-threatening injuries and had been taken to hospital by air ambulance.

The road has been closed between J41 at Catterlen and J40 at Penrith southbound, but National Highways said traffic was starting to move.

It warned of delays of up to 30 minutes and about three miles (5km) of congestion on approach.

Cumbria Police said it was investigating and urged people with information to get in touch.

It added neither driver was hurt, but two other passengers had suffered minor injuries.
