Slipway to be reopened after Storm Goretti damage
States of GuernseyFishers will have "unhindered and unsupervised" access to Alderney breakwater for the first time since Storm Goretti caused damage in January, the States has said.
A new barrier will allow them to use the slipway to land their catch while work continues to fix "large holes" on the lower walkway.
Currently, the swing gate has to remain closed for safety reasons, but that meant the undamaged slipway was also closed, the States said.
The Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure said the installation of a new barrier would temporarily prevent access to the breakwater while allowing slipway access.
States of GuernseyAlderney was hit by severe wind speeds of 95mph (154km/h) on the night of 8 January, with thousands of trees lost and damage to properties.
The States said "significant work" was required to fix the lower walkway.
It said there was also a risk of "loose material" falling from damaged sections of the upper wall to the lower walkway.
Damage extends underneath the upper walkway, it said, in areas not "immediately obvious" to pedestrians.
It said barriers preventing access would be removed as soon as it is safe for pedestrians to access the breakwater again.
