Holidaymakers who drive after arriving in the UK by ferry and by air are being stopped by police in a bid to tackle drink-driving.

The operation by Dorset Police began on Tuesday with officers stopping drivers at the Port of Poole and carrying out breath tests at the roadside.

The campaign will also target people arriving at Bournemouth Airport who continue their journey by car.

On Tuesday evening, officers stopped 96 drivers at Poole but none were found to be under the influence of drink or drugs.

Insp Lee Turner, of the Roads Policing Team, said: "We know that enjoying a drink while on a plane or ferry can be part of the holiday experience, but some people can get carried away and forget they still need to drive home.

"The message is very clear – if you are planning on drinking while on a plane or ferry, make sure you are not the designated driver home.

"Drink driving is one of the fatal five and can have serious or tragic consequences."
