A teenage boy has been released by police, while another remains on bail following the death of a 73-year-old man.

Two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, were arrested by police on suspicion of murder in connection with a serious assault on 8 April that led to the victim dying in hospital two days later.

The assault took place on Honeybourne Way in Cheltenham at about 19:30 BST, and reports suggested the victim approached two males on the Millennium Bridge after watching them throw a large branch at a cyclist down below.

Gloucestershire Constabulary said on Wednesday that the 16-year-old had been released with no further action taken against him.

Police said it is not believed the cyclist was injured in the incident. The males were approached by a man in his 70s on Honeybourne Way, and an exchange was reported to have taken place before one of the males punched the victim in the face, causing him to fall to the ground.

The males left before police and ambulance crews arrived at the scene.

The victim was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in a critical condition but died on Friday.

Gloucestershire Constabulary said the death of the man is being investigated by the Major Crime Investigation Team, and officers are appealing for further information and witnesses to come forward.
