A former Surrey bowling club could be bulldozed and replaced with nine family homes.

The outline planning application, lodged with Elmbridge Borough Council, would see the 1970s Weybridge clubhouse demolished and replaced with a small housing development of mostly two-storey homes with loft rooms.

Developers Birchwood Homes said the new plan fixes the issues raised when a previous scheme was rejected over road safety concerns, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

The new layout removes the need for a new access point for the sight on Springfield Lane altogether and now meets national road safety guidance, the developers say.

According to planning documents, there are no trees on the current bowling green site and it has limited wildlife value.

Developers are instead proposing landscaping improvements and a financial contribution towards biodiversity elsewhere.

The proposed site sits just next to the Monument Green Conservation Area, but planning inspectors have already indicated a development of this size could fit in with the character of the area.

The new homes would be walking distance of Weybridge town centre.

The plans also do not include affordable housing, as developments under 10 homes fall below the council's threshold for that requirement.

People have until 12 May to comment on the application.
