Stornoway's Post Office could move to a Co-op store less than a mile away

The Post Office has proposed moving its Stornoway branch to a Co-op shop in the Lewis town.

The store in Macaulay Road has recently been refurbished.

Last year, the Post Office announced it was offloading the last of the branches it owned and moving to a fully franchised network.

The Stornoway branch at Francis Street became a franchise in November.

''Heart of community life''

Martin Edwards, Post Office transformation delivery director, said the Co-op store operated at the "heart of community life".

He said he was confident the proposed move would deliver long-term service provision to the local area.

The shop is the Co-op Group's largest store and employs 100 people. It is less than a mile from the current Post Office branch.

Under the proposals, the Post Office said the same services as before would be available, with fully-trained staff and opening hours unchanged.

Consultation on the relocation closes on 3 June.
