Police were called to Victoria Park in Leamington Spa on Wednesday evening

A murder investigation has been launched after a man's body was found in a park.

Officers were called to Victoria Park in Leamington Spa shortly before 19.45 BST on Wednesday after a member of the public saw a man in the river, police said.

A post-mortem examination on Thursday established that the man died from injuries which were consistent with an assault.

The family of the man, who was in his 50s, have been told of his death and were being supported, Warwickshire Police added.

"I'd like to reassure [residents] we have a team of detectives working to establish the full circumstances that led to the man's death," said Det Insp Gareth Unett.

"We're carrying out a number of inquiries including checking CCTV and will have officers in and around the park providing reassurance."

He urged anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area from late Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning to contact the force.

He also asked people not to speculate about the death as this could cause unnecessary distress to the family.
