Wiltshire Police has made a self-referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct

Wiltshire Police has referred itself to the policing watchdog after the death of a man in Chippenham.

Officers were called to the town bridge area at about 02:40 BST on Tuesday following reports of concern for the welfare of a person.

The force said the body of a man was later recovered from the River Avon after a search which involved Wiltshire Search and Rescue (WILSAR) and a specialist team from Avon and Somerset Police.

Wiltshire Police said it had made a self-referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), "as is mandatory following prior contact with police". The man's family have been informed and are being supported, the force added.
