Car park to close at night to stop illegal racing
Redcar & Cleveland Borough CouncilA seafront car park will be closed at night for six months to stop illegal car racing and anti-social behaviour.
Gates have been installed at the Majuba car park in Redcar and it will shut between 22:00 and 06:00 BST from 7 April until late September.
The local authority said neighbours have endured racing, donut-ing, wheelspins, loud revving and even tugs-of-war in the early hours of the morning.
Redcar Council's cabinet member for neighbourhoods Neil Bendelow said the people living near the car park should not "have to put up with this nuisance".
"This is a trial and we'll monitor and assess throughout the six-month period before making further decisions," he said.
"However, those people intent on this kind of anti-social behaviour should consider themselves warned that neither ourselves nor the police will allow this continue and we will do what it takes to stop it."
A Public Space Protection Order has been in place since 2021 but the council and police said they do not have the resources to patrol the site every night.
Redcar and East Cleveland Neighbourhoods Inspector Neil Deluce said the force welcomed the move.
He said: "As a neighbourhood policing team we are open to a variety of problem-solving methods including education and enforcement but, with this environmental-based solution, it will help bring immediate respite to the local community."
Signs have been installed at the car park in preparation for start of the trial.
