Tributes paid to 'cherished' stadium cat Millie
HandoutA much-loved cat who became a familiar face at an athletics stadium in Birmingham for more than 15 years and who has died was "cherished", staff said.
Millie, believed to be about 20 years old, regularly made her way from her nearby home to the Alexander Stadium's gymnastics and martial arts centre, where she spent her days greeting visitors and finding sunny spots to sleep.
Her death prompted an outpouring of messages from people online who said their visits were brightened by the "friendly and inquisitive" cat.
Gary Tempest, general manager at the stadium, said Millie was "a cherished part of the Alexander Stadium family".
He added that a commemorative plaque would be installed so she could be remembered.
Millie was known for wandering freely around the building in Perry Barr, from the gymnastics hall to reception, but staff said she was most often found napping near the entrance.
Facilities assistant Tracy Brandrick, who worked at the stadium for more than 20 years, recalled how the cat once accidentally travelled to Manchester after climbing into a contractor's van.
"She just got into the back without anyone noticing," she said. "He drove all the way home before realising. Luckily he brought her back a few days later."
She also described a period when Millie went missing for a month, prompting concern among staff and her owner, before she "strolled back in as if nothing had happened".
"This place simply won't be the same without her," she added.
