Man jailed for raping girl over years of abuse
West Midlands PoliceA man who admitted raping a young girl in a "sickening campaign of abuse" has been jailed.
John Evans, 59, repeatedly sexually assaulted the victim during the 1990s until she was a teenager, West Midlands Police has said.
He was identified and arrested in 2023 after she came forward to police as an adult to tell her story.
The Coventry man was sentenced at Warwick Crown Court on 31 March to 20 years in prison, extended by five years, after he pleaded guilty to rape and indecent assault.
He was also placed on the sex offender register for life.
When confronted about the abuse, he offered no comment beyond the fact he had known the girl at the time, police said.
A spokesperson for the force said its non-recent sexual abuse team investigated reports of sexual abuse and rape, no matter how long ago they occurred.
"It is through the bravery of the survivors that cases are built and offenders brought to justice," they added.
