A former police officer has been barred from policing after admitting sharing child abuse images.

Michael Elmer, an Avon and Somerset Police constable in Bristol, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of a child and one count of distributing such images at Exeter Crown Court in February.

The 36-year-old, of Swineford in Gloucestershire, also admitted a charge of sharing a film or photo of a person in an intimate state for the purposes of sexual gratification. He will be sentenced for all the offences on 20 April.

At a police misconduct hearing on Tuesday, Elmer was found to have committed gross misconduct and was told he would have been dismissed had he not already resigned.

Elmer was arrested in May 2025 by officers following a tip-off. He was suspended by Avon and Somerset Police and later resigned.

"The outcome of this misconduct process means he will never be able to work in policing or any other law enforcement role again," Det Ch Con Jon Reilly said.

"His deplorable actions have appalled his former colleagues, who he's severely let down, along with the public he took an oath to serve and protect," he added.
