Man charged with raping 16-year-old girl

A man has been charged with raping a 16-year-old girl in Cumbria.

The girl was allegedly attacked in Brampton, near Hadrian's Wall, at about 01:00 GMT on Friday, Cumbria Police said. She is being supported by specialist officers.

Peter Bennett, 54, of Croft Road, Brampton, has been charged with rape and sexual assault.

He has since appeared at Carlisle Magistrates' Court and the case was sent to the crown court, where the next hearing will be held on 20 April.

Detectives are appealing for anyone with information or who was in the Sawmill Lane and Stanley Road at the time of the incident to contact them.
