Man strangled and controlled ex-partner
Wiltshire PoliceA man has been jailed for strangling a former partner and conducting a campaign of controlling behaviour towards her.
While they were together, Ali Abbas, of Walton Street in Easton, Bristol, monitored the victim's phone, controlled who she spoke to, and tried to dictate what she wore.
After the relationship ended he bombarded her with calls and messages, created multiple social media accounts to contact her, hacked into her social media accounts and went to her place of work.
The 27-year-old was jailed for three years and two months at Salisbury Crown Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to coercive control, two counts of strangulation and admitting to breaching a suspended sentence.
He was handed a 10-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim, who was based in Wiltshire.
PC Abbie Osborne, of Wiltshire Police's violence against women and girls team, praised the victim for her bravery in coming forward.
"The actions of Abbas have had a lasting effect on the victim and I hope this result allows her the peace and closure that she deserves to continue her life knowing that he is behind bars," she said.
