Snow: Transport and schools disrupted by weather

There is disruption to transport and schools are closed following snow in several parts of Northern Ireland.

County Fermanagh experienced the heaviest of the snowfall, which prompted a yellow warning from the Met Office.

Translink said all local services operated around Enniskillen were suspended on Friday morning, but have since resumed.

There are also weather warnings in force in the Republic of Ireland.

A status yellow warning for ice applies to the entire Republic until 09:00 local time on Saturday.

An earlier yellow warning for snow and ice in counties Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Wexford and Wicklow, and the Munster region, ended at 18:00.

In Northern Ireland, a yellow warning for snow expired at 10:00 GMT.

"Some slushy accumulations of 1-2cm are possible to sea level this morning," a spokesperson for the Met Office said.

"Some places above 100m altitude could see 2-5cm, and a few higher spots could perhaps see as much as 8cm of snow before conditions improve this afternoon," they added.

The police said they had received several reports of vehicles becoming stuck in heavy overnight snow in and around Enniskillen.

"Police are advising motorists to avoid the Derrylin Road, Enniskillen, towards Bellnaleck, as recovery operators are attempting to recovery a lorry," a spokesperson for the Police Sevice of Northern Ireland added.

"Please consider whether your journey is necessary.

"If you must travel, do so with extra caution."

Irvinestown Primary School, Jones Memorial Primary School in Mullylogan in County Fermanagh and St Joseph's College, St Michael's College, Mount Lourdes Grammar School and Erne Integrated College in Enniskillen are closed.
