New £1.5m research facility plan for city hospital
Royal Wolverhampton and Walsall Healthcare NHS TrustsA new £1.5m research facility will be established at Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital.
The clinical centre is possible after the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust was awarded the money from the National Institute for Health and Care Research's (NIHR) Capital Investment Programme.
The funding will modernise and refurbish current facilities for dedicated clinical research, as well as improve patient areas for clinical trials and increase capacity for both commercial and non-commercial research activity.
The trust said it would bring substantial benefits for patients, staff and the wider health system.
Pauline Boyle, group director of research and development, said securing the funding was a "major milestone".
"These upgraded facilities will enable us to expand both the number and range of studies we deliver, giving more patients the opportunity to access innovative treatments," she said.
Brian McKaig, chief medical officer at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, added: "Research is at the heart of high-quality, modern healthcare.
"This investment will ensure our clinicians and researchers have the environment they need to deliver world-class studies that directly benefit our patients."
