Margo Bohacz had organised an Easter egg hunt in The Meadows since 2020

The organiser of an annual Easter egg hunt said she was "heartbroken" to cancel this year's event due to rising costs of chocolate eggs.

Margo Bohacz began the initiative, which needs about 200 eggs, to "bring a bit of joy" to The Meadows, in Nottingham, during the Covid lockdown in 2020.

She said over the years it was funded through donations and money out of her own pocket, but added she can no longer afford to run the event as prices have risen.

According to the Office for National Statistics, the price of chocolate rose by more than 17% last year.

Bohacz said she has always enjoyed "getting involved" in community events.

She said when she first organised the Easter egg hunt it would cost about £250, including decorations and prizes.

"Everyone loved it," she said.

"Some parents were more excited than the kids. It was always so nice seeing people running around looking for eggs."

Margo Bohacz said "the price of chocolate eggs have gone through the roof"

"The price of chocolate eggs have gone through the roof," she said.

"It's ridiculous. We used to buy a box of 40 eggs for £10, you're talking £25 now."

Bohacz said it was a difficult decision to cancel this year's event, which was due to take place at AMC Gardens and Memorial Gardens.

"For some families, it was the only chance their children had to get one, which makes it really sad," she said.

"But I couldn't ask people to help fund it with the cost of living as it is.

"It just wasn't feasible this year, and I'm heartbroken it's not going ahead.

"It's hurt me to say no and not being able to do it because it's something I've done for the past five years," she added.
