Further road closures to accommodate repairs to a motorway have been announced.

Newcastle's A167 central motorway is currently undergoing a £9m programme of maintenance to repair concrete and replace joints on its viaduct.

The road has already been reduced to one lane during the day, but Newcastle City Council has now warned drivers the slip road from the motorway to Great North Road will be closed from 24 April for about two weeks.

The council's director of city operations, transport and neighbourhoods Christine Herriot said the closures would allow workers "unrestricted access" to the site and minimise the length of traffic disruption.

The council warned there will be various weekday overnight closures on the northbound and southbound carriageways throughout the duration of the project.

Rose Bridge, which runs over the central motorway from Claremont Road, has also been closed in one direction until mid-June.

The council advised drivers to avoid travelling through the centre of Newcastle and to cross the river using the A1, A19, Tyne Tunnel or Scotswood Bridge.

Work to repair the central motorway is expected to last until January 2027

"We recognise that these works are disruptive to the travelling public, particularly with the overnight closures and various slip road closures," Herriot said.

"But it is important that these works take place to ensure we have robust infrastructure in Newcastle to help keep the city moving."

The 16-month repair project is set to be completed by January 2027.
