A horse had to be rescued after it got stuck in "thick mud" in its own paddock.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) was called to Fence Houses to help free Eyke Seasprite.

After a four-hour operation involving a "range of specialist animal rescue techniques", 11 crew members from Bishop Auckland and High Handenhold Blue Watch were able to free the 12-year-old mare.

The fire service said the horse was doing well and reminded owners to take "simple preventative measures" to keep their animals safe, including routinely inspecting outdoor spaces to make sure ground conditions were suitable.

The horse became stuck at about 08:45 BST on 29 March, the CDDRS said.

Firefighters used specialised animal rescue techniques

The fire service said its firefighters were "specially trained" in animal rescue techniques, and also worked alongside a vet from Clevedale Veterinary Practice to free the animal.

A spokesperson reminded owners to cover holes and secure drains in their outdoor spaces, and regularly check for escape routes in gardens.

They also said to make sure fencing and gates were secure.
