University Hospitals Tees said it was planning to reduce the number of people it employed

Two health trusts are planning to cut about 600 roles as part of cost cutting measures.

University Hospitals Tees (UHT) said it was planning to reduce the number of people it employed by about 3.75% in line with "wider NHS ambitions".

The job losses came to light from Freedom of Information requests carried out by union Unison, which found 21,600 posts will be cut across 202 English NHS trusts by 2028.

A spokesperson for UHT, which oversees the North Tees and Hartlepool and South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trusts, said the staff reductions were designed to ensure "workforce models are optimised to reflect health and care needs" across the region.

"Since 2020 University Hospitals Tees' whole-time equivalent growth in staff has been over 2,800," a spokesperson told the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

"We will be aiming to reduce our headcount by around 3.75%, circa 600 members of staff."

The national job cut figures were revealed in Unison's Less Fit for the Future report, which said trusts across England faced deficits totalling more than £1.1bn last year.

However, it made clear not all the cuts were "immediate redundancies" and some jobs would be removed through vacancy freezes, natural turnover and restructuring or reductions in agency and bank staffing.

However Unison's head of health Helga Pile said cutting jobs was the "wrong answer".

"The NHS is being asked to transform how care is delivered, with more community services and technology," she said.

"But none of this is possible without the staff to make it happen."
