A driver clocked at more than 135mph (217km/h) on a dual carriageway told police they were on their way to pick up a Chinese takeaway.

The driver was stopped on the A26 Lisnevenagh Road near Kilrea, County Londonderry, on Saturday evening.

Writing on Facebook, the Police Service of Northern Ireland's NI Road Policing and Safety unit said: "The drivers explanation . . . they were heading for Chinese takeaway!!"

The driver will now be required to attend court, the police said, and could face a possible driving ban.

'Nearly double the speed limit'

Police said the driver, who was in a red Mitubishi Evo, had passed a police crew on the A26 dual carriageway.

"The Evo's speed was measured along the A26 Lisnevenagh Rd and at times the vehicle was travelling in excess of 135 mph, this is nearly double the permitted speed for the A26 dual carriageway," the police said.
