'Diabolical' theft sees tools taken from charity
Supported Community BusinessA charity which helps people with additional support needs has had tools and wood stolen from its base in Cheshire.
Supported Community Business (SCB) runs a therapeutic workshop where people take part in real work tasks, learn new skills and build confidence with the aim of moving into employment.
Cheshire Police said inquiries were ongoing and officers urged anyone with information to contact them.
Ruth Blundell, one of the charity's support workers, said it was "diabolical" and that it was obvious the thieves had stolen from a charity.
The theft, which happened in the early hours of Thursday morning, left some of those who use the service feeling distressed in what should be a safe space, staff with the charity said.
"We differ from other day services because we act as a workplace, which gives a sense of purpose, belonging and we promote inclusion with that," Blundell said.
The charity moved to its new workshop in Crewe in January, which has a dedicated woodwork area that is used to build wooden planters and bird boxes, which are sold to raise money.
Blundell said CCTV cameras had recorded a van pulling into the car park and someone got out and took timber as well as tools.
Supported Community Business"It's made us feel very vulnerable," she said.
"Yesterday was a tough day, everyone was downbeat, we needed to reassure them a lot.
"This should be their safe space."
There was a lot of upset an anger, she added.
Supported Community BusinessEquipment stolen included saws, screwdrivers, wrenches and cans of WD40 as well as lengths of wood which had been donated.
"It's going to slow down the production of the planters we can build," Blundell said.
"We did have some stored inside, so we can still carry on. We'll turn it around and make the most of what we've got."
She said the response from the local community had been "amazing" and people had been turning up to donate tools already.
"People are very eager to help where they can," Blundell said.
