Gabriella said the police call commending her sons for bravery came "out of the blue"

A five-year-old boy and his three-year-old brother have been hailed "young heroes" after calling for help using a smart speaker when their mother became unwell.

Matthias and Lucas were at home in Newton Aycliffe with mum Gabriella, when she experienced seizure symptoms.

Matthias told Alexa to call his dad, who called an ambulance, while Lucas stayed by his mum's side telling her she was going to be okay and rubbing her back.

Now the boys have been given certificates for their bravery by officers from Newton Aycliffe Neighbourhood Policing team who said the pair were "quick-thinking, young stars".

Gabriella said she had been having unexplained seizures in the months leading up to the incident on 27 February.

She was alone with her sons when she went for a lie down and explained to the boys that "mammy's not feeling very well".

Matthias then said he would "call daddy" and instructed Alexa to do so and an ambulance was called.

Meanwhile Lucas tried to reassure her by saying "it's going to be okay mammy".

Two male police officers in their uniforms, standing next to each other facing the camera, you can only see their legs as they are much taller than the children. In front of them are two little boys, aged three and five, the boy on the left had blonde hair, the boy on the right had brown hair. They are holding police certificates.

When the ambulance arrived Matthias explained to the crew what had happened and Gabriella said she was in awe of how mature the boys were in that moment.

"For a five and three year old to act like that, for Matthias to know, and use his initiative to ring my husband was incredible," she said.

Not long after, officers from the Newton Aycliffe policing team visited the boys to give them ACE award for their "courageous and heroic" actions.

Police community support officer Stewart Fotheringham said: "It's very hard to put into words how brave they were at the time and how they were so calm and helped their mum in that situation - it's just incredible."
