Police said they deployed armed officers "as a precaution"

Cumbria Police were called to Edward Street in Carlisle at about 03:25 BST on Sunday, where they deployed armed police "as a precaution due to the nature of the assault".

The victim, who is in his 30s, was taken to hospital with suspected stab wounds and was discharged after treatment.

Two men, one in his 20s and one in his 40s, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remain in custody. Three other people were arrested in connection with the assault.

They are a man in his 20s, who was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent, and a woman in her 30s and another in her 40s who were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

The man was bailed pending further inquiries and the two women remain in custody.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area of Edward Street, Sybil Street and Lindisfarne Street on Saturday or Sunday to contact them.

They are also appealing for anyone who saw a grey Seat Arona in these areas or the London Road area to come forward.
