Police have asked people to avoid Canning Place and the surrounding areas

A security alert in north Belfast which forced a number of people to leave their homes has ended after being declared a hoax.

Ammunition Technical Officers (ATO) attended after a suspected pipe bomb was found at the front of a residential property in Canning Place on Sunday morning.

After examination it was deemed to have been "an elaborate hoax".

Police thanked local residents for their patience while the safety operation was conducted and have asked for anyone with information to contact them.
