A community leader and businessman has said he hopes to promote inclusion and help young people develop skills through his new royal position.

Ammar Yusuf Mirza has been appointed High Sheriff of Tyne and Wear by the King, replacing Jo Curry.

High sheriffs were originally tasked with maintaining law and order but the position now works to support the judiciary, emergency services and charities.

Mirza said taking on the role was a "privilege and a responsibility" and his first year would focus on improving inclusivity.

"This role is about people, those who serve, protect, support, and bring communities together every day," he said.

"The focus for the year ahead is clear, champion inclusion, recognise contribution, and create opportunity."

Among his aims, Mizra, who is also a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and an honorary colonel of the 101st Northumbrian Regiment Royal Artillery, said he wanted to help young people develop skills and achieve their aspirations.

Mirza has also appointed three chaplains representing different faiths living in the region, which is said to be a first for a high sheriff's office.

Imam Mohammed Rahman will represent Islam, Pundit Krishan Attri will represent Hinduism and the Reverend Peter Adegbie will represent Christianity.
