'Remarkable' Reg still teeing off at 98

Reg Robinson says he has been "lucky" to have had a long and happy life

One of Britain's oldest golfers is celebrating his 98th birthday by signing up for another year at his local course.

Reg Robinson, from Ashby, in Scunthorpe, plays two rounds a week at Holme Hall Golf Club and has been described by club mates as "remarkable".

Reg said: "I'm so lucky. The lads [I play with] look after me. If I get a bad bounce in to a bunker, they'll see that I get in and then pull me out!"

Robinson, a former farm labourer and entertainer around Lincolnshire during World War Two, started playing golf almost 50 years ago and won the Senior Open at his club in 2017 at the age of 89.

Reg's son, Pete Robinson, says he is proud of his father's achievement

"Everything is still there, apart from his teeth!" joked Reg's son, Pete Robinson.

"It's an honour, at the age of 68, to be able to tell people that I'm going to play golf with my father. It's a fantastic achievement for both of us.

"He's got two sons, two daughters. He's also got grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, so he's doing pretty well."

Reg is a popular member at the club, with general manager Ben Skeet saying: "His smile brightens everyone's day. He's a pillar of the community.

"Whisper it quietly, he might be in to his hundreds, still as a member and still playing. We certainly hope that'll be the case."

And Reg's secret to a long and healthy life?

"You might as well get on with people and enjoy it," he added.
