A car that was thought to have been pushed over a cliff at Withernsea was hauled to safety over the weekend, the council has said.

Contractors at East Riding of Yorkshire Council lifted the abandoned blue Peugeot 107 up the cliff, near Waxholme Road, on Saturday.

It comes after walkers and residents expressed their concerns that the vehicle could have caused pollution if it was left on the beach for too long.

The authority said it had been unable to trace the owner of the vehicle and said the car would now be investigated by streetscene enforcement officers as an abandoned vehicle.

Councillor Paul West said: "As much debris from the car was removed as possible, but we urge people to be cautious around the area where the vehicle was, in case of broken glass and other objects.

"Warning signs have been placed at the site."
