Six people have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a serious assault in Hull city centre.

Emergency services were called to Queen Victoria Square at about 03:40 BST on Sunday and a 53-year-old man was taken to hospital with a life-threatening head injury. He remains in a critical condition, Humberside Police said.

Three women, two aged 20 and one aged 21, and two men, aged 27 and 34, have been arrested and remain in custody, the force added.

Det Chief Insp Leanne Murphy said: "Investigations remain ongoing and my team is working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, this includes reviewing CCTV, house to house enquiries and taking witness statements."

A 49-year old woman was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on Sunday but has now been released on conditional bail.

Murphy said a cordon that was in place on Carr Lane had now been lifted but an increased police presence remained in the area.

Anyone with their own CCTV, mobile phone or dashcam footage is being urged to contact police.
