A 37-year-old driver has been arrested after his car crashed into a row of houses in Ayrshire.

The man was taken to hospital after the crash on Kilwinning Road in Stewarton at 00:50 on Sunday morning. Nobody else was injured.

Houses in the terrace were evacuated as a precaution due to a possible gas leak. Engineers attended and made the area safe.

Police Scotland said the driver had been released from hospital and most residents had been able to return to their homes.

A force spokesperson said: "The 37-year-old male driver has been arrested and charged in connection with road traffic offences.

"A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."
