Motorist admits causing death by dangerous driving

A motorist has admitted causing death by dangerous driving following a crash at a petrol station on the A1.

Fiona Phippen, 45, also pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving when she appeared at Lincoln Crown Court on Monday.

Urwah Tanveer, 20, who was standing next to a Mercedes at the time, died after he was hit on the forecourt at Foston Services, near Grantham, Lincolnshire, in June 2024.

Samina Idris, 83, a passenger in the Mercedes, was seriously injured in the incident.

Lincolnshire Police previously reported that a Nissan was involved in the incident.

The court heard Phippen, of Church Close, Great Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire, had no previous convictions and was the principal carer for two children.

Phippen changed her plea earlier after previously denying the offences.

In court, John McNally, for Phippen, asked for sentencing to be adjourned to allow for the preparation of a probation report.

Judge Simon Hirst gave the defendant, who has been bailed, an interim driving ban and warned her that a custodial sentence was likely.

He told Phippen: "You have pleaded guilty to serious matters. It is right the likely sentence is immediate custody.

"But given your age and that you have not been in trouble before, a pre-sentence report will be of assistance to me."

Phippen is due to be sentenced at Lincoln Crown Court on 15 June.
