The University of Sunderland has commissioned a feasibility study on the proposals for its campus

A university is looking into proposals to move to a single city centre campus.

The University of Sunderland has commissioned a feasibility study on the viability of one site around its existing City Campus and Sunderland's city centre.

The decision, made by the university's board of governors, follows a consultation with students, staff and partners to "develop a long-term vision for its campus buildings and facilities" in Sunderland.

A spokesman for the university said maintaining the existing model with two campuses – at City Campus and St Peter's Campus – also remained an option as part of its masterplan.

The university said the masterplan was intended to respond to changing student expectations, rapid technological and societal shifts, and the financial environment for the higher education sector.

"This reflects the need for high-quality, professions-focused teaching and research spaces, a strengthened civic presence, and a more coherent campus footprint that supports collaboration and community," the spokesman said.

The outcome of the feasibility study is expected to be presented to the board in the autumn.

The university said it would continue to engage with students, staff and local partners.
