National Highways has told motorists to expect delays following a vehicle fire in Surrey.

It said the Hindhead Tunnel on the A3 was closed in both directions between the A283 (Milford) and the A333 (Hindhead), due to the blaze on Saturday morning.

The northbound tunnel has since reopened but the southbound section remained closed as of 8:30 GMT for "recovery and clear-up", it added.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said it was alerted to the "single-vehicle fire" by the tunnel at about 06:40.

"Two fire engines were sent, while Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and the police were also in attendance," a spokesperson for SFRS said.

They said firefighters left the scene at around 07:45, adding: "There were no casualties."

National Highways said diversion routes were in place and drivers should allow extra time for their journey if planning to use the stretch of road.

"Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey," it said.

Surrey Police has been approached for comment.
