Blue-green algae is naturally occurring

Members of the public have been urged to avoid a channel of water in Devon that has seen blue-green algae form.

The Environment Agency said the algae, which was toxic to people and pets, had been detected in the Exeter Flood Relief Channel.

Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, are naturally occurring organisms found in inland waters, estuaries, and the sea.

The agency said dead fish may be present due to the reduction in oxygen levels caused by the algae, adding : "It's toxic to people and pets - do not enter the water and keep animals well clear."
