Three taken to hospital following incident at school

Three people have been taken to hospital following an incident at a secondary school in County Londonderry.

Emergency services were called to Coleraine Grammar School at 16:15 BST.

The school confirmed there had been a "chemical incident" resulting in a hazardous gas being released in a confined area.

They said no pupils had been on site at the time, but three members of staff were advised to attend hospital.

In a statement, the school said that they are "working proactively with the emergency services to ensure a full clean-up takes place as soon as possible".

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) sent six fire appliances to the scene.

NIFRS area commander Ryan Thompson confirmed the incident had "been safely resolved" and "they are now in the exit phase".

The incident occurred due to the "accidental mixing of chemicals in the swimming pool area of the school," he confirmed.

The ambulance service additionally dispatched a rapid response paramedic, an advanced paramedic and a Hazardous Area Response Teams (Hart) crew, but have now left.
