Two teenage boys have been taken to hospital with injuries thought to have been caused by fireworks being used near a high school in Glasgow, police have said.

The boys, both pupils at Holyrood Secondary School in the city's southside, were taken ambulance to the Royal Hospital for Children for treatment.

A bomb squad attended the scene near the school on Dixon Avenue after police were called at about 12:15.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said the explosive ordnance disposal team were "in attendance to assess an item found at the scene".

The road remains closed and people are advised to avoid the area.

Nearby businesses and homes have been evacuated as a precaution.

Dixon Avenue is closed at Cathcart Road, Gartuke Street and Belleisle Street.

A council spokesperson said: "We're aware of an incident that took place out with the school premises this afternoon.

"As a result of the incident, two pupils were injured and have been taken to hospital for assessment.

"We are working with the appropriate authorities as inquiries continue."
