A 27-year-old man has been arrested after a four-car crash on the A9 in the Highlands.

Four people were taken to hospital after the incident, between the villages of Dalwhinnie and Newtonmore, at 14:50 on Friday.

Police Scotland said the crash involved a Toyota Hilux, Seat Ibiza, a BMW 3 Series and a Volvo XC60.

The BMW driver, aged 51, his passenger, 42, and the male Seat driver, 24, were taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness. A 23-year-old female passenger in the Seat went to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

The condition of the injured people is not known. The road was closed for almost six hours for accident investigations.

The force said the 27-year-old man had been arrested in connection with a road traffic offence.

Sgt Chris Donaldson said: "Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the crash.

"I would ask anyone who witnessed the crash, or who was travelling in the area at the time and may have dash-cam footage, to contact us."
