More than £400,000 has been awarded for repairs to Boston Guildhall

More than £400,000 has been awarded for urgent repairs to a Grade I listed town centre building.

The money, from the Museum Estate and Development Fund (MEND), will be spent on Boston Guildhall, which was built in the 14th Century for the religious Guild of St Mary and is now a museum.

The repairs will include timber works, internal paint layers, plaster, and internal and external brick works that are "deteriorating and crumbling", Boston Borough Council said.

Councillor Sarah Sharpe, portfolio holder for heritage, culture and tourism, said: "It's been around for 630 years and it's down to us to maintain it for future generations."

Sharpe said the funding would be "coming imminently".

She said the repairs, due to start in 2027 and be finished by spring 2028, would be carried out in phases to allow the building to stay open.

"It's about making sure the repairs that need doing are done sooner rather than later to stop it getting into a state of disrepair where it couldn't be used," Sharpe added.

"It's really super that the Guildhall has been recognised as being so important."

The Guildhall's funding is part of a £5m investment by MEND across the East Midlands to support cultural venues, museums and libraries.
