A man has appeared in court after a shooting that left a person in his 20s seriously injured.

William Scammell, 24, from Speedwell, Bristol, appeared at Bristol Magistrates' Court on Saturday charged with attempted murder and being in possession of a shortened shotgun.

A manhunt was launched by Avon and Somerset Police after a gun was fired at a car on Speedwell Road at about 13:47 BST on Wednesday.

Scammell, who spoke only to confirm his date of birth and address, was remanded into custody and will next appear at Bristol Crown Court on 13 May.

Police said a man and woman, also in their 20s, arrested on Thursday on suspicion of assisting an offender, have since been released on bail.

The male victim of the shooting remains in hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries.

Four local schools went into temporary lockdown and roads were closed as officers dealt with the incident.
