Wellingborough Town Council said it had submitted its bid to be the UK Town of Culture

Wellingborough has joined the race to become the first ever UK Town of Culture in 2028.

The town council said it had submitted its expression of interest in the competition, launched by the government, which will see the winner take home £3m.

It said its bid highlighted the Northamptonshire town's historic roots, diverse communities and growing cultural offer.

Paul Bell, the council's leader, said: "From our rich heritage to our vibrant local arts and cultural organisations, this bid is an opportunity to celebrate who we are and to share our story with the rest of the country."

The UK Town of Culture is a new Department for Culture, Media and Sport competition.

The government will select the best small, medium and large towns from the applications it receives, with the winner expected to be announced in 2027.

Two other finalists will each receive £250,000 to deliver a programme of cultural activity.

"Wellingborough has a wealth of history, creativity and community spirit," Bell added.

"This is about putting Wellingborough on the map."

The authority said it would work with local partners, community groups and residents if the town gets shortlisted.

The town's bid follows similar ones submitted by Kettering and Northampton.
