A 64-year-old man has been jailed after trying to rob a bank with a note while pretending to be armed with a gun.

On 29 January 2026, Gary Fishlock entered a bank in Westwood Cross in Broadstairs and threatened staff, demanding money, Kent Police said.

The force explained that a staff member at the front counter was approached by Fishlock, of no fixed address, who slid her a note reading: "I have a gun, put the money in the bag."

He was charged with attempted robbery and possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear or violence. He pleaded guilty to both charges and was sentenced to two years in prison on 1 April at Canterbury Crown Court.

The staff member told police the man was holding a concealed item inside a bag and she feared it was a firearm.

Police added that Fishlock later said to staff: "I want money, give me money."

Employees quickly went to secure rooms at the back of the bank and contacted 999.

Fishlock stayed inside the bank for about a minute after the alarm had been sounded, before leaving and standing outside the entrance, police said.

About 15 minutes after the initial call was made, firearms officers arrived and arrested him.

A search revealed that no weapon was inside the bag he brought to the bank, police said.

Det Con Adam Pope said: "Fishlock's behaviour was reckless and intimidating, and this sentence reflects the seriousness of his actions, as well as the emotional damage he has caused to those involved."
