Person hospitalised after fire at animal bedding firm

A person has been taken to hospital following a fire at an industrial estate in Omagh, Country Tyrone.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) received a call at 07:19 BST reporting the fire in the Doogary Industrial Estate on the Bankmore Road.

The blaze is at Boyd Bedding - an animal bedding company. A large operation is under way involving 10 fire appliances in attendance, an aerial appliance and two water tankers.

The Bankmore Road area has been closed at both the A5 and Crevenagh Road ends. Motorists are being asked to seek an alternative route.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) confirmed that following initial treatment at the scene, one person has been taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

The NIFRS is asking local residents to keep windows and doors closed.

Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area to support the ongoing firefighting operations.

Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) MLA for West Tyrone, Tom Buchanan, said the incident is "deeply concerning for all those involved and for the wider local community".

He said he wanted to pay tribute to the "swift and professional response" of the fire service and emergency personnel who "worked to bring the situation under control".

"My immediate thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident," Buchanan said.

Sinn Féin MP Órfhlaith Begley said she commends the emergency services for "responding swiftly to this incident".

"My thoughts are with the individual injured due to a fire that has taken place in Boyd Bedding," Begley said.

"I am thinking of all those impacted by this incident and hoping they make a full and speedy recovery."
