Police said they received a report of a suspicious device in Workman Avenue

Homes have been evacuated as police attend a security alert in Workman Avenue in Belfast.

Cordons are in place on the Springfield Road at the junctions of Springhill Parade and Elswick Street after a report of a suspicious object in the area.

Residents have been advised to evacuate by police and nearby facilities have been opened for locals.

Sinn Féin councillor Claire Canavan said it's "causing significant disruption" to the community.

"I condemn those responsible for this incident and would urge people to avoid the area while the alert continues," she added.
