A town museum is enlisting the help of the public to demolish its old sheds, making way for a new community space.

Deal Museum in Kent has received planning permission for a new multi-use space for visiting schoolchildren, community groups and artists.

To make way for the new build, the local history museum has called for the public to come along on Thursday with their tools to help tear down the dilapidated sheds in its boatyard.

Museum trustee Mark Kelly said: "The main thing is we can stay open during the winter months. That, to us, is brilliant that I can still have stalls, local groups, people coming in."

Kelly explained that the museum had to close in the winter months as it had no heating.

The museum, which is run by volunteers, raised £12,500 to pay for the project despite setting a target of £10,000.

The extra money will be used to help furnish the new site.
