Plans for a 146-bed hotel on the edge of Shrewsbury will go before councillors on Tuesday.

It will be a second attempt to build one next to the David Lloyd Club on Sundorne Road, after previous plans were withdrawn in December 2023.

Dave Courteen, who used to run the health club as "The Shrewsbury Club" before selling it to David Lloyd in 2024, is behind the planning application.

But there have been a number of objections, including from Shrewsbury Town Council and The Green Party.

A report drawn up by Shropshire Council planning officers recommended councillors approve the planning application.

They said: "The hotel would provide new visitor accommodation that is linked to an existing and well-established leisure facility, in turn generating clear economic and tourism benefits."

Shrewsbury Town Council argued that because it would be on the edge of town, hotel did not fit with its "Big Shrewsbury" vision and could increase congestion there.

Other objectors also raised concerns about traffic, as well as concerns about limited parking and about the impact on the environment.

The applicant has agreed to contribute £130,000 towards improvements to the nearby Sundorne Road junction and the section of road which links to the A49.

The council officers concluded the plans were "acceptable in principle".

Their report said the concerns of local residents had been "fully considered", but at this outline planning approval stage, "there is no evidence of unacceptable or irreversible harm that would warrant refusal".
