Police said their investigation into Neil Thompson's cause of death continued on behalf of the coroner

Investigations continue into the death of a man that was found on school grounds in Wolverhampton.

Neil Thompson, known to friends and family as Chuck, was discovered with fatal injuries at Smestow Academy in Wolverhampton on 19 January.

His death, which was initially treated as unexplained, has been deemed by police to be an accident, however the cause of his death is still under investigation on behalf of the coroner, West Midlands Police said on Thursday.

Black Country Coroners' Court also confirmed that an investigation was ongoing and no date for a resumed inquest hearing had been set.

The 45-year-old's family previously described Thompson as "a beautiful son, brother, father... and very much loved in the community of fishing".

They said: "His love for life and funny stories touched the lives of so many people."

In the moments leading up to the discovery of his body, detectives believe he had been riding from the Aldersley area along the Smestow Canal path, on the outskirts of the city.

He was last seen on Wheatsheaf Road at 01:00 GMT.
