Prisoner van escape prompts helicopter search

An air and ground search is under way for a prisoner who escaped from a transport van.

Jason Evans, 32, made off from the vehicle at about 17:30 BST in Poole Road in Poole, Dorset Police said.

He was being transported after appearing before Poole magistrates charged with assault and other offences, the force added.

A police helicopter and officers on the ground are conducting searches in the area.

Evans is described as white, 5ft 8in (1.73m) tall and of medium build with ginger hair and was last seen wearing grey clothing.

Supt Joe Pardey said: "I would urge anyone who has seen a man in the area who matches the description given above and appears to be avoiding detection to please come forward.

"We would ask the public not to approach him directly and to please dial 999 immediately.

"There will be an extensive police presence in the area as we carry out these inquiries."
